University Rankings : Nine Indian universities and institutes achieved global top 50 rankings in specific subjects, according to the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025. These nine institutions secured a total of 12 entries. IIT Delhi ranked 26th globally in engineering while the Indian School of Mines (ISM) University, Dhanbad, secured 20th position globally in the mineral and mining engineering category.
IIT Bombay has been placed 28th in engineering with a score of 82.3 and also ranked 192nd in the arts category. The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad has secured the 27th spot in the Business and Management Studies category. IIT Madras, ranked first in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), achieved 53rd in engineering globally. OP Jindal Global University (JGU) has achieved rank 1 among institutes in India for the sixth consecutive year in law and legal studies.
The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025 compared over 21,000 academic programmes from over 1,700 universities in 100 countries and territories, spanning 55 subjects across five faculty areas. “The 2025 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject features 55 individual subjects across five broad subject areas. This year’s rankings are our biggest yet, with 171 institutions included this year who were not present in the 2024 edition. Several subjects, including medicine, computer science and information systems, and materials science now feature more ranked institutions than ever before,” reads the official notice.
QS World University Rankings By Subject 2025: International Rankings
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the University of Oxford, and Stanford University have secured the top three rankings respectively in the engineering and technology field. While Harvard University, Oxford University, and Johns Hopkins University grabbed the top three spots in life sciences and medicine.
QS Rankings 2025 highlighted emerging trends in future industries, including 34 new entries in the Data Science and AI top 100, 45 changes within Computer Science’s top 50, and China’s first-ever top 10 entry in Engineering and Technology. Eight new countries and territories joined the rankings, with 171 first-time institutions and 14 universities reaching the top 10 positions in their subject areas.
