Miranda House hikes hostel fees; college says in line with inflation
Miranda House : The Delhi University’s Miranda House college has hiked its hostel fees for students by Rs 6,000 per semester, the Students Federation of India (SFI) claimed on Monday. The college administration has increased the hostel fee from Rs 27,090 to Rs 33,090 for odd semesters and from Rs 26,750 to Rs 32,750 for even semesters, the the college’s SFI wing said in a social media post.
Bijayalaxmi Nanda, the principal of Miranda House, stated that the increase was made in light of the facility’s “maintenance cost” and “inflation.”
After careful discussion, we have increased the hostel fee. It is done with inflation over the past five to six years and our ongoing maintenance costs in mind. The fee has not been significantly raised. She also claimed that the Miranda House charged the least for its hostel facility in comparison to other prominent colleges. We have strict policies regarding providing student support.
She added that she will investigate the charge climb to address the understudies’ interests.
In the mean time, left-associated understudies body SFI has had a problem with the “precarious” climb expressing it would make monetary weight on understudies.
In a social media post, the students’ union stated, “The recent fee hike at Miranda House hostel is a significant financial burden on students and their families, with odd semester fee increasing from Rs 27,090 to Rs 33,090 and even semester from fees rising from 26,750 to Rs 32,750.”
It added, “This alarming trend where education becomes a privilege rather than a right highlights a steep increase of Rs 6,000 per semester.”
In addition, it demanded that the administration disclose all measures and decisions pertaining to this hike.
The updated hostel facility fee structure is available on the college’s website.
Odd semester starts in July and go on till November/December and seven semester starts in December or January and endures till May.
