Mahatma Gandhi University to grant 60 days maternity leave to PG students
The Mahatma Gandhi University has decided to provide degree and postgraduate students over the age of 18 with a 60-day maternity leave—a first in Kerala—so that they can continue their education uninterrupted. According to a university press release, the decision was made on Friday during a Syndicate meeting presided over by Pro Vice Chancellor C T Aravinda Kumar.
It stated that the recommendations of a committee formed by the Syndicate to conduct a study on the topic were approved.
The university says that maternity leave can be taken before or after delivery, but only once during the course of a course and only for the first or second pregnancy. According to the release, the leave period cannot be combined with any other leave and will include public and common holidays.
In cases of abortion, tubectomy, and other procedures, it stated, a 14-day leave will be granted. Students who are taking maternity leave during a semester will be permitted to register for that semester’s exams, but they will be able to write them as supplementary students in the following semester alongside regular students to ensure that their studies are not disrupted.
However, according to the release, they will not miss a semester because they can continue their studies with their own group after their maternity leave ends. The Syndicate decided that the head of the institution or department should make necessary arrangements for students who are on maternity leave to take practical, lab, and viva exams.
According to the release, a medical certificate from a registered doctor must be submitted with the application for maternity leave three days before the start of the leave.
