IIT Kanpur To Admit Students To BTech, BS Programmes Through Olympiad Scores

IIT Kanpur : Admission to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur will be done through Olympiads from the academic year 2025-26. As many as five BTech and BS programmes including Biological Sciences & Bioengineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Chemistry, Economic Sciences, and Mathematics & Statistics departments will be admitting students through Olympiad scores.

“This initiative offers a unique opportunity for those students who wish to pursue their passion in these areas at one of India’s leading institutions, bypassing the traditional JEE (Advanced) route,” states the official press release.

For admission to courses in the Biological Sciences and Bioengineering department, the IIT will admit one student through a mathematical Olympiad score and one candidate from either biology, physics, or chemistry Olympiads. If any candidate has cleared both mathematics and biology, physics or chemistry Olympiads, he or she will be considered for the subject with the higher rank. However, if the candidate has the same rank in both Olympiads, he or she will be considered in the mathematics department.

Furthermore, a candidate from biology will be preferred over physics and chemistry. For admission to the Computer Science and Engineering department, candidates with high scores in mathematics and informatics Olympiad will be considered. Whereas only the math Olympiad score will be considered for admission to economic sciences mathematics and statistics.

“Candidates must have attended the relevant Olympiad training camp in the subject for which they are applying. Those who were previously admitted to IITs via JoSAA or had an IIT admission cancelled are not eligible,” the notice added.

After shortlisting candidates based on the Olympiad scores, they will have to appear for a written examination and interview for the final selection process. The application process will be conducted in March and admissions will be made in July.

Prof. Shalabh, Dean of Academic Affairs, IIT Kanpur, said, “Our Olympiad-based admissions initiative is designed to provide opportunities for the brightest minds who have excelled in international competitions. We are cultivating a diverse academic environment rich in innovation and critical thinking. Our goal is to enhance our academic community with individuals who bring unique perspectives and exceptional analytical skills. Through this initiative, we aim to support and promote innovation in disciplines that are essential to India’s growth and global competitiveness.”
