Houston University, ICCR join for research on Tamil language, literature, culture

The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and the Houston University have agreed to establish the ICCR Chair of Indian Studies to study Tamil literature, language, and culture. The MoU, which was signed on March 29, is the latest step in an effort to improve the university’s Indian studies program that has been going on for years. Renu Khator, the first Indian immigrant to lead a comprehensive research university in the United States since 2008, stated, “We are grateful to the Indian Council for Cultural Relations for this collaboration that will certainly strengthen the cultural ties between our two countries.” She stated that expanding the university’s international reach will enhance students’ educational experience and prepare them for global success.

A visiting Indian scholar with expertise in Tamil studies will hold the ICCR Chair of Indian Studies position. This fall, the Chair will begin functioning. According to Aseem Mahajan, the Council General of India in Houston, the Chair’s objectives are to deepen the education partnership, teach and conduct research on Tamil literature, culture, and language. “This Memorandum of Understanding will further enhance and deepen the US education and knowledge partnership,” Mahajan stated. The Tamil language is one of the top five languages spoken in the United States, which is home to nearly 3,00,000 Tamil-Americans. The Tamil language is regarded as the oldest language in the world.

In order to preserve and promote Tamil culture, the visiting professor in the University of Houston College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences will instruct students, collaborate with faculty on research, and give public presentations throughout the semester, according to a university press release. Along with Rutgers University and the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Houston (UH) is the only American institution to collaborate with the ICCR on its global Indian Chairs Abroad program. Dan O’Connor, Dignitary of the School of Human Sciences and Sociologies, said the meeting teacher will be an extension across numerous disciplines. ” O’Connor noted that applicants for the position are currently being evaluated. “India is not only a modern, global hub of business and culture, but it is also an ancient hub that is rich in history, literature, and architecture going back millennia,” he said.
