GATE 2023 Topper: Civil Engineering AIR 1 Suban Kumar Mishra left corporate job to prepare for exam

In the GATE 2023 Topper exam, the results of which were announced on Thursday, Suban Kumar Mishra, who is 27 years old, achieved an all-India rank (AIR) 1 in the exam. In order to prepare for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), he quit his well-paying corporate position at Ola Cabs in 2020.

Suban, a graduate of IIT Kanpur, was placed with Ola Cabs through campus placement in 2016. I wanted to see if I could fit in in the corporate world after I graduated. In my four years of work experience, I learned that there is no work-life balance regardless of salary. You can make money, but you can’t spend it. As a result, I’ve made the decision to quit my job in 2020 and focus solely on preparing for competitive exams,” Suban stated.

Mishra cleared the test as a protected choice as his definitive objective is to qualify Designing Administrations Test. He took the GATE in 2020, where he got a 2300 rank, and in 2022, he got to 801. However, he returned in 2023 to be at least in the first 50 because he was still dissatisfied with his score.

I applied for the GATE in order to secure a backup position at PSU. I was also preparing for ESE in the interim. I made it to the interview stage in 2022 after failing the prelims in 2021. However, I was unable to make the merit list. This year, I passed the preliminary rounds and will now compete in the mains, Mishra stated.

Mishra, who is from the Alwar district in Rajasthan, took both online and in-person coaching to get ready for the exam. Due to the pandemic, I joined Unacademy in 2020 to prepare online. I also enrolled in offline classes as the restrictions on the lockdown were lifted. Normal review and practice of fake papers and past papers helped in understanding the test example and kind of inquiries posed to in the test,” Suban said.
