Even though it is more sophisticated than content created by previous innovations, academic-style content produced by ChatGPT is relatively formulaic and would be picked up by many existing AI-detection tools, according to a new study.

Researchers from Plymouth Marjon University and the University of Plymouth, UK, said, “The findings should serve as a wake-up call to university staff to think about ways to explain to students and minimize academic dishonesty.” The Large Language Machine (LLM) ChatGPT, which has been touted as having the potential to transform research and education, has also raised concerns about academic integrity and plagiarism throughout the education sector. To address a portion of these, this study urged ChatGPT to deliver content written in a scholastic style through a progression of prompts and questions.

According to the study, some of these instructions included “Write an original academic paper, with references, describing the implications of GPT-3 for assessment in higher education,” “How can academics prevent students plagiarising using GPT-3,” and “Produce several witty and intelligent titles for an academic research paper on the challenges universities face in ChatGPT and plagiarism.” Other instructions included “How can academics prevent students plagiarising using GPT-3.”

The resulting text was pasted into a manuscript and organized broadly in accordance with ChatGPT’s suggested structure. The study, which was published in the journal Innovations in Education and Teaching International, said that genuine references were added throughout.

This procedure was only made clear to readers in the discussion section of the academic paper, which was written by the researchers themselves without the software’s help. The most recent chatbot and artificial intelligence (AI) platform, ChatGPT, which went live in November 2022, has the potential to open up more and more exciting opportunities in academia. However, the academic community faces significant difficulties as it advances.

Universities will undoubtedly face significant difficulties as a result of this most recent AI development, particularly when it comes to testing student knowledge and teaching writing skills.
