JEE-Advanced 2025: IIT-Kanpur Withdraws 3-Attempt Eligibility Criteria, Chances Back To 2 Now
JEE-Advanced 2025: In a significant change to the eligibility criteria for the JEE-Advanced 2025 exam, IIT Kanpur reversed its earlier decision to allow candidates three attempts, bringing the number of permissible attempts back to two. The decision has left thousands of students, especially those who were hoping for a third chance, deeply disappointed.
Earlier this year, IIT Kanpur had modified the eligibility criteria, increasing the number of opportunities to appear for JEE-Advanced from two to three. This change was welcomed by many students, particularly those who had been hoping for another shot at the exam. However, after a meeting of the Joint Admission Board (JAB), the decision was reversed.
As a result, students who passed their Class 12 board exams in 2023 will no longer be eligible to appear for the exam, a provision that had previously been extended under the new rule.
The recent U-turn has left thousands of hopeful candidates in dismay, many of whom had begun preparing for their JEE-Advanced exams with renewed vigour after the announcement of a third attempt.
Amit Ahuja, a counselling expert at Allen Career Institute, explained that this sudden change would deeply affect the plans of many aspirants. “After IIT Kanpur’s announcement, a large number of students registered for JEE-Main with the hope of gaining entry to IITs,” Ahuja said, adding that the hopes of students who hoped for an additional chance to secure a seat at an IIT, were dashed by the decision.
One of the key reasons cited for the reversal is the concern that offering three attempts might encourage students to push for a permanent increase in the number of opportunities in the future. To prevent this, the authorities decided to revert to the original two-attempt policy.
The decision had a direct impact on coaching centres, particularly in Kota, a city renowned for its coaching institutes. Since the announcement of the third attempt earlier this year, Kota witnessed a significant rise in the number of students flocking to the city for specialised JEE-Advanced preparation.
With the revised eligibility criteria now back in place, many students who were gearing up for another year of preparation are facing uncertainty. Numerous enquiries from students seeking admission to coaching classes and hostels in Kota had been cancelled or put on hold as a result of the change in policy.
As of now, students who cleared their Class 12 board exams in 2023 and were hoping for a third chance will have to reconsider their plans. With the eligibility criteria now firmly set at two attempts, the pressure is on for those hoping to crack JEE-Advanced in 2025 to optimise their preparations in a limited timeframe.
