The book discusses the rise in a scheduled tribe’s demands for autonomy, rights, and recognition. The book makes a connection between the discussion of ethnic mobilization in the hills and the broader politics of classification and categorization in the region. The books expects to offer a top to bottom comprehension of the political environment of Darjeeling.

The published book discusses the manner in which the region’s inhabitants negotiate for their identity and the nature of such demands. It further exhibits that the ethnopolitics unfurling in Darjeeling have a wide-scale application to comprehend comparative acknowledgment battles unfurling in South Asia. The author argues that the politics of contemporary India are to blame for the recent push for ST status. A diachronic analysis of ethnic mobilization in Darjeeling based on regional and group recognition is also provided in the book.
