IIT Madras to Offer 4-Year BS Programme
IIT Madras: IIT Madras has recently inaugurated its Department of Medical Sciences and Technology, which will provide a unique four-year BS program in medical sciences and engineering. This new course offering is the first of its kind in India, according to the institute.
The program takes an interdisciplinary approach to equip students with the necessary skills to design medical devices that can save lives, conduct drug discovery research, apply artificial intelligence in medicine, and engage in fundamental medical research. The department aims to train physicians to effectively apply technology in their clinical practice and establish the groundwork for training physician-scientists in India.
Esteemed medical doctors from India and abroad, who played a significant role in the development of the curriculum, will serve as “Professors of Practice” in the department. The department has already formed partnerships with top hospitals and medical institutions in India.
According to Lakshmi Narayanan, the Co-Founder of Cognizant, collaborative research in medical sciences can propel India to become a global leader in clinical outcomes. India has already demonstrated its research capability and potential in fields such as space, nuclear, digital, and biotechnology. Narayanan believes that extending this capability to medicine is a natural progression for the country.
The institute will also conduct both fundamental and applied research programs that bridge different medical disciplines. By providing researchers with the necessary resources and platform, the department aims to foster innovation and develop new technologies that can enhance the lives of patients for generations to come.
At the launch event, Professor V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, stated that the COVID-19 outbreak in India highlighted the need for integrating technology and medicine to manage similar situations effectively in the future. While we hope that such challenges do not arise again, this intervention will be critical in defining our response to potential crises.
Additionally, Professor V. Kamakoti emphasized the department’s mission to bring together experts from medicine and technology to develop innovative solutions to medical problems that were once considered unsolvable. The department aims to enhance treatment options and transform healthcare. In line with IITM’s mission of accessibility, the department aspires to provide technological interventions in medicine that can ensure quality and affordable healthcare is accessible to all citizens in the country.
