IIT Indore, NASA-Caltech develop low-cost camera for multispectral imaging of flame
A low-cost camera setup that can provide multispectral imaging of four chemical species in a flame using A single DSLR camera has been developed by the Indian Institute of Technology IIT Indore in collaboration with NASA-Caltech in the United States and the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. According to Devendra Deshmukh, a professor in the IIT Indore’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, it can simultaneously capture multiple spectral three-dimensional images of four chemical species in a flame using only a single DSLR camera. In the past, scientific imaging required a complicated system with four cameras.
Researchers believe that it would be useful for the study of fuel combustion, which in turn could improve combustion engines to make them more efficient and reduce carbon emissions. A professor at IIT Indore who was involved in the research told PTI that with this smart camera, the picture of the four chemical species in a flame can be clicked together in full detail. According to Deshmukh, the “CL-FRAME,” a low-cost DSLR camera device, was developed after nearly three years of research conducted in collaboration with NASA-Caltech in the United States and the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.
The device was developed by a group of five researchers at a cost of approximately Rs 50,000. Deshmukh claims that the elements released during fuel combustion in industrial burners and engines, which can be found in a variety of vehicles, aircraft, and spacecraft, can be studied by analyzing the images captured by the device. According to him, such research makes it possible to make necessary adjustments to burners and engines in order to make sure that fuels are used efficiently and in a way that is good for the environment during combustion.
The use of petroleum fuels will decrease as engine and burner efficiency improves, resulting in lower emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Therefore, it will assist us in reaching carbon neutrality by 2070, he stated. Deshmukh stated, “The device is being introduced to the market with the assistance of a start-up.” Structured illumination, which enables simultaneous imaging of multiple species, has been utilized, he stated. We can image low-intensity species like CH* with a DSLR camera thanks to structure illumination, which typically necessitates intensified CCD cameras. We intend to investigate the approach’s applications in advanced combustion studies, ultrafast imaging, multidimensional imaging, and other fields.
