Prof Bharat Bhasker appointed as IIMA Director

The Indian Institute of Ahmedabad (IIMA) has a new director in Professor Bharat Bhasker.

According to a statement released by IIMA, Professor Bhasker, who is currently the Professor of Information Technology and Systems at IIM Lucknow, will take over as IIMA Director on March 1, 2023.

Prof. Arindam Banerjee has been appointed director-in-charge in the interim by the Board of Governors, and her term runs from February 1 to February 28, 2023. Prof. Errol D’Souza, the current director, will be retiring on January 31.

“As a successful leader and a Professor of Technology with experience working in India and across the globe, I am confident that Professor Bhasker will carry forward the legacy and lead the institute to newer horizons,” stated Pankaj R. Patel, Chairperson of the IIMA Board of Governors. Patel also expressed gratitude to Prof. D’Souza for the exceptional contributions he made to the Institute during his tenure.

The IIMA Board of Governors’ search committee had narrowed the field to 13 candidates for the top job.
The statement continued, “During a meeting held at the IIMA campus on Monday, the Board of Governors announced the appointment of Prof. Bharat Bhasker as the next Director for the institute, based on the committee’s recommendations.”
Prof. Bhasker, who received his BTech from IIT Roorkee, went on to earn his MS and PhD from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in the United States.

He worked for IIM Lucknow for more than two decades in a variety of roles before joining IIM Raipur. In 2015, he was its acting director for five months. From 2003 to 2005, he also held the position of Dean of Planning and Development at IIM Sirmaur.

He has taught as a visiting professor at the University of Texas in Dallas, USA, and ESSEC Business School in Paris, France. He was a distinguished professor at Chung-Ang University in Seoul, Korea, a research professor at the University of California, Riverside, in the United States, and an adjunct professor at the Information Systems University. from College Park, Maryland.
Prof. Bhasker has held senior positions with numerous organizations, including MDL Information Systems, NASA, SYBASE Inc., and the Goddard Space Flight Center, among others.
