NIRF ranking: New rules drafted by the University Grants Commission (UGC) will require colleges to participate in rating or ranking exercises of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), NationalBoard of Accreditation (NBA), or the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) to be eligible for UGC funds. Plus, colleges must have and have at least 75% of the sanctioned teaching strength filled and pay teachers on the central and state salary scale to be eligible.

The “UGC (Fitness of Colleges for Receiving Grants) Rules, 2024” were made available for public comment on January 27 and are intended to replace the much shorter 1975 rules. The rules have been altered in accordance with the UGC Act that is currently in effect.

“For institutions to be eligible for grants from the UGC, these are prospective criteria that must be met. More colleges with grant applications are eligible. Three fundamental tenets serve as the foundation for the proposed changes to 12B regulations. First, increasing the number of colleges that are eligible. The second is related to the quality of teaching by requiring teachers to be hired and following the UGC and state government salary scales. Third, ensuring robust checkpoints in the event of violations and expediting the processing of applications. According to M Jagadesh Kumar, the chairperson of the UGC, in an interview with Careers360, “These revisions aim to enhance efficiency and accountability within the system.”
