UGC Bans JJTU From Offering PhD Programmes For 5 Years

UGC : After banning three universities, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has prohibited Shri Jagdishprasad Jhabarmal Tibrewala University in Rajasthan from offering PhD programmes for five years. The Commission earlier banned OPJS University in Churu, Sunrise University in Alwar, and Singhania University in Jhunjhunu to offer PhD programmes to students. The decision was taken after JJTU was found violating UGC PhD regulations.

“After analyzing/examining/evaluating the information/data submitted by the Shri Jagdishprasad Jhabarmal Tibrcwala University (JJTU). Chudela. Jhunjhunu. Rajasthan the Standing Committee has found that Shri Jagdishprasad Jhabarmal Tibrewala University (JJTU) did not follow the provisions of the UGC Ph.D. Regulations and also the academic norms for the award of Ph.D. degrees,” the commission said in an official notice.

The UGC further added that JJTU was given an opportunity to explain why they failed to comply with the provisions of the Ph.D., however, the responses were found unsatisfactory. “The Standing Committee has, thus, recommended that the UGC may debar Shri Jagdishprasad Jhabarmal Tibrewala University, Chudela, Jhunjhunu. Rajasthan from enrolling Ph.D. students for the next five years,” the notice added.

The university has been barred from offering PhD for the academic year 2025-26 to 2029-30. The commission has advised prospective students and parents not to take admission to the Ph.D. programme offered by JJTU. “In the absence of UGC approval. Ph.D. awarded by the Shri .Jagdishprasad Jhabannal Tibrewala University shall not be treated recognized/valid for the purpose of higher education and employment,” the commission stated.

Commenting on the action on these universities, UGC Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar had earlier said, “Universities should be committed to maintaining the highest standards in PhD programmes. UGC will take appropriate action against institutions that fail to follow UGC’s PhD regulations. We are also in the process of checking the quality of PhD programmes in a few other universities. If they are found to violate the PhD regulations, action will be taken against them too. It is necessary to single out such erring institutions and prevent them from admitting PhD students. We should ensure that the integrity and global reputation of Indian higher education remain uncompromised.”
