PM Modi Invites US Universities To Set Up Offshore Campuses In India

US Universities : In a significant move to bolster academic and research collaborations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited American universities and educational institutions to open offshore campuses in India. “The Indian community in the U.S. is a vital link in our relationship. To further strengthen our people-to-people ties, we will open new Indian consulates in Los Angeles and Boston. We have also invited American universities and educational institutions to establish offshore campuses in India,” PM Modi said while addressing a joint press conference.

During a crucial meeting at the White House, Prime Minister Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump discussed the importance of Artificial Intelligence, innovation, and new technologies. They announced several new initiatives, including the U.S.-India TRUST program, a plan to accelerate AI infrastructure, and the INDUS Innovation initiative, all aimed at strengthening tech cooperation between the two countries.

INDUS Innovation, a new innovation bridge modeled after the successful INDUS-X platform, will advance U.S.-India industry and academic partnerships, fostering investments in space, energy, and other emerging technologies to maintain leadership in innovation and meet the needs of the 21st century.

President Trump and Prime Minister Modi also highlighted the importance of advancing people-to-people ties between the two countries. In this context, they acknowledged that the more than 300,000-strong Indian student community contributes over $8 billion annually to the U.S. economy and helps create a number of direct and indirect jobs.

They recognised that the flow of talent and the movement of students, researchers, and employees have mutually benefited both countries. Acknowledging the significance of international academic collaborations in fostering innovation, improving learning outcomes, and developing a future-ready workforce, both leaders resolved to strengthen collaborations between higher education institutions through efforts such as joint/dual degree programs, twinning programs, the establishment of joint Centers of Excellence, and the setup of offshore campuses of premier U.S. educational institutions in India.
