NEET UG 2023 eligibility criteria revised for Indian candidates abroad

The non-resident Indian (NRI) candidates’ eligibility requirements for the 2023 National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test for Undergraduate (NEET UG 2023) have been updated by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Presently Indian nationals, NRIs, abroad resident of India (OCI), people with Indian beginning (PIO) and outside nationals are qualified for affirmation in clinical, dental, ayurveda, siddha, unani and homeopathy schools subject to rules and guidelines outlined for it. Prior, OCI cardholders were considered confirmation against a Non-Occupant Indian (NRI) seat or an exaggerated seat as it were. The Supreme Court’s decision in a related case came after the decision in this one.

According to a statement from the NTA, “aspiring OCI Candidates of NEET (UG) 2023 are hereby informed that the amended provision of Clause 5.2.2 of the Information Bulletin of NEET (UG) 2023 dealing with the Eligibility of OCI Cardholders for NEET (UG) shall be read as follows” in accordance with the judgment dated 03.02.2023 of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India in W.P(C) 891/2021 and connected matters and in supersession

According to NTA, the NEET UG 2023 information bulletin’s current OCI candidate provision stated that the OCI cardholder, including the PIO card holder, is a foreign national with a foreign passport and is not an Indian citizen. In a similar vein, the PIO cardholder and foreign nationals will not be permitted entry into any seat that has been reserved solely for Indian citizens. According to the existing provisions, OCI and PIO will be treated as foreigners and will only be eligible for seats reserved for NRIs; they will not be eligible for seats reserved for Indian nationals, including paid seats in deemed universities. The changed qualification standards peruses, “Indian Nationals, Non Occupant Indians (NRIs), Abroad Resident of India (OCI), People with Indian Beginning (PIO) and Far off Nationals are qualified for confirmation in

Clinical/Dental/Ayurveda/Siddha/Unani/Homeopathy Universities subject to rules and guidelines outlined by the particular State Legislatures, Organizations and the Public authority of India by and large.”
