NCTE To Resume 1-year B.Ed, M.Ed Courses From 2026-27 Academic Session After A Decade

NCTE : The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) is set to reintroduce the one-year BEd and MEd programmes from the 2026-27 academic session. The one-year courses were discontinued by NCTE about 10 years ago and since then the programmes have been offered for two-year durations. The decision aligns with the National Education Policy or NEP 2020 which highlights flexibility and multiple entry exit options for students.

Candidates who have completed either a four-year degree or postgraduation can apply for the one-year BEd programme. Those who have completed a three-year graduation will need to opt for the two-year BEd course.

Apart from revising the B.Ed programme duration, the one-year M.Ed programme will be offered full-time by the NCTE. On the other hand, the two-year programmes will be offered only to those who are working as teachers and educators, reported Indian Express.

Candidates who want to do a B.Ed in 2025 will also get admission to a 2-year course. The B.Ed admission forms that will be released in 2026 will have the option of admission in 1 year B.Ed and 1 year M.Ed courses. NCTE Chairman Pankaj Arora has said that the 2-year M.Ed. course was started in 2015 but it did not give much benefit in teacher training. Seats remained vacant in many institutions. Now research and hands-on community engagement tasks will be included in the new M.Ed. course.

The Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) which is a four-year course combining a bachelor’s degree with BEd was launched in 57 pilot institutions in 2023-24. It will be deemed as a regular course from the 2026-27 academic session. Furthermore, four specialised ITEP courses will be introduced this year which include Yoga, Physical Education, Sanskrit Education, and Art Education.

The draft regulations have been approved during a recent meeting conducted by the NCTE. It will soon be made public to seek feedback.
