NBEMS Issues New Leave Policy For Medical Trainees

NBEMS : Medical studies like MBBS, MD and DM are among the toughest courses in India. Even after completing these, training in the medical field comes with its own set of challenges. The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), which oversees medical training and examinations, has recently revised its leave policy for medical trainees. This change is significant, and all trainees are advised to understand the new rules to avoid complications.

Exit Exam Eligibility

Medical students must clear the NEET PG exam to get admission into postgraduate medical courses. After admission, they must complete their training under the guidelines of NBEMS. The exit examination, which is mandatory to finish any NBEMS program, can only be taken by candidates who complete their training within the specified timeframe. Failing to do so may lead to ineligibility for the exam.

Revised Leave Policy

NBEMS has introduced changes to the leave guidelines for medical trainees during their training period. These are the key points to note:

– Annual Leave:

Trainees can take a maximum of 30 days of leave per year.

– Weekly/Duty Offs:

Trainees are entitled to weekly or duty offs during their training. Any weekly/duty offs falling within a trainee’s leave period will count towards their annual leave. For instance, if a trainee takes a 30-day leave, all weekly or duty offs during this time will be included in the 30 days.

– Maternity and Paternity Leave:

Female trainees can avail of maternity leave as per Central or State Government policies applicable to their training institute. The leave can be taken starting two months before the expected date of delivery (EDD) and up to six months after the date of delivery (DOD), depending on the state’s policies. Male trainees are eligible for up to two weeks of paternity leave. No additional leave for childcare or extended maternity leave is provided under NBEMS guidelines.

– Study Leave:

NBEMS trainees are not entitled to study leave. The 30 days of annual leave must cover any study-related requirements. During this leave, trainees are not permitted to work elsewhere or enrol in any academic courses.
