MG University VC to take over duties of Malayalam university vice chancellor

As the state’s Chancellor of Universities, Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan has directed that the Vice Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi MG University also serve as the VC of Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University.

According to the Kerala Raj Bhavan, the notification regarding the additional fee paid by Malayalam University to Dr. Sabu Thomas, the VC of Mahatma Gandhi University, was issued on Saturday. It stated that Thomas would assume responsibility immediately and remain in that position until further orders were issued. This is in exercise of abilities presented by sub segment 9 of Area 29 of Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam College Act 2013, read with 7(3) of UGC Act 2018,” the Kerala Raj Bhavan said.

The move comes just a few days after the Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the state’s universities, opposed the state government’s decision to form a search committee for the Malayalam University’s Vice-Chancellor (VC). In a letter, Khan questioned the state government’s right to form a search committee. Tirur in the Malappuram district is home to the Malayalam University, which is named for Thunchath Ezhuthachan, who is regarded as the founder of the language.

According to the Chancellor’s office, Khan’s response came after the state government repeatedly requested that the committee consider his nominee. The University Act (Amendment) Bill, which grants the state government the authority to appoint vice chancellors of universities, is said to have been the basis for the committee’s formation, according to sources. However, that Bill is still awaiting approval from the Governor, who has not yet done so. In his letter, the Governor stated that there is currently no law granting the government the authority to establish a search committee.

The Malayalam University’s former vice chancellor, V Anil Kumar, had finished his term on February 28. A search committee is made up of a Chancellor’s nominee and representatives from the government and the University Grants Commission (UGC), according to the University Act. However, the government had decided to form a committee with five members, including nominees from the university Syndicate and the KSHEC.
