Madhya Pradesh: 5% MBBS, BDS seats reserved for government school students

The Madhya Pradesh government has decided, in accordance with recent amendments to the Medical Education Admission Rules (2018), to reserve 5% of government school students’ seats for admission to government and private colleges for MBBS and BDS programs. In a notice, the state government also states that 30% of seats in all colleges have been reserved for women candidates and 5% for candidates with physical disabilities. In addition, a quota of 3% will be allocated to Army candidates and freedom fighters who wish to enroll in MBBS and BDS.

The new amendments will be beneficial to students enrolled in government schools from sixth through twelveth grade. Students who are enrolled in private schools from kindergarten to eighth grade under the Right to Education Act (RTE) and who are accepted into government schools from ninth grade on will be subject to the reservation rules. However, the candidate must present the original certificate issued by the district education officer, district coordinator, or assistant commissioner of the relevant department in order to be admitted to the medical graduate program from the government school student category.

The National Eligibility and Entrance Test, or NEET, is used to determine who is eligible to apply to medical schools. In February 2023, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan stated, “We will give reservation to students of government schools, regardless of caste, in medical studies.” He went on to say that children attending government schools will need to be protected, or else they will fall behind students attending private schools.
