JNUTA protests to continue Maulana Azad Fellowship for minority students

Today, JNUTA organized a protests in which they demanded that the Centre immediately reverse its decision to end the Maulana Azad Fellowship for minority students.

The Maulana Azad Fellowship (MAF), a five-year fellowship for PhD candidates that provided financial assistance to six notified minority communities—Muslims, Buddhists, Christians, Jains, Parsis, and Sikhs—has recently been discontinued by the central government.

JNUTA referred to this move as “anti-minority policy” and stated that it undermines inclusivity’s value. The JNUTA requests a prompt inversion of the counter minority strategy obvious in the withdrawal of the MAF and the maintaining of the majority rule freedoms, everything being equal, to take part in advanced education with nobility and unafraid,” the educators’ body said.

In addition, two lawmakers in the Lok Sabha called for the pre-matric scholarship and Maulana Azad Fellowship to be reinstated for minority students. Danish Ali, a member of the BSP, and Syed Imitiaz, a member of the AIMIM, argued that the scholarships should be reinstated to give minority students a chance at success.

While the Maulana Azad Fellowship has been completely eliminated, the government recently announced that students in grades 1 through 8 will no longer be eligible for the pre-matric scholarship.
