IITs Admission: SC Dismisses plea against eligibility criterion of 75% marks in Class 12

IITs Admission: On Monday, the Supreme Court rejected a petition that challenged the requirement of scoring 75 percent in the higher secondary examination for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

The requirement of scoring 75 percent in the higher secondary examination for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) faced dismissal by a vacation bench of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and K V Vishwanathan in the Supreme Court.

The bench declined to intervene, stating that the criterion had existed previously and should not be interfered with. The court recognized the issue as an educational matter that should be left to experts.

The plea, filed by Chandan Kumar and others, challenged the eligibility criterion of obtaining 75 percent marks in Class 12 board exams for admission to IITs. The petitioners’ counsel argued that due to the Covid-19 pandemic, students were granted waivers, and those same students now have a higher chance of clearing the examination for admission to esteemed engineering institutes. The council emphasized the exceptional performance of the students, with scores exceeding 98 percent in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main, and requested their admission.

The counsel further explained that although the applicant scored 92 percentile in JEE Main and is eligible to appear in JEE Advanced, she will be ineligible for admission due to her board exam score falling below 75 percent.

As per the JEE Advanced brochure released this year, candidates are required to have secured a minimum of 75 percent in their Class 12 board exams.
