IIT Mandi develops new algorithm for automatic detection of HVAC system failures

An algorithm that automatically detects operational failures in HVAC systems that are installed in buildings was developed by researchers at IIT Mandi and the Université de Lorraine in France.

The IIT Mandi research concentrate on has been distributed in Diary of Building Execution Recreation in a paper coauthored by IIT Mandi, School of Processing and Electrical Designing, academic partner, Tushar Jain, and his examination researcher Mona Subramaniam alongside his teammate Joseph J. Yamé from Université de Lorraine, France.

Delays in identifying and correcting errors in HVAC systems can result in poor thermal comfort and indoor air quality, which can have a negative impact on occupant health and productivity. An automated fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) algorithm that integrates with the building automation system (BAS) or building energy management system (BEMS) has been developed by IIT Mandi researchers to address this issue. In order to guarantee that the system is always available, this system assists maintenance crews in identifying and predicting potential failures, analyzing their impact, and determining their significance to the BAS.

demonstrating the effectiveness of the developed algorithms by simulating a one-story building with three zones with the help of SIMBAD software, which is based on MATLAB. In two different scenarios, the researchers tested four distinct single and multiple VAV damper fault scenarios. IIT Mandi’s algorithm can be retrofitted with existing BAS/BEMS without installing additional hardware, according to a press release. The calculation is sufficiently able to deal with vulnerabilities like the external atmospheric conditions and the quantity of tenants in the structure.
