IIT Madras, Tel Aviv University to offer course to build water quality map of India, the world

IIT Madras : Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has announced that it will offer a water quality course in collaboration with Tel Aviv University Israel and KMCH-Research Foundation (KMCH-RF), Coimbatore. The four-month long course will be offered in hybrid mode through the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) online platform.

The institute stated that students in their final year of science and engineering, as well as anyone with a technical background who is interested in water quality, would benefit most from taking the course. In addition, IIT Madras urged universities to work together to establish a center for practical sessions.

“Students will contribute to the development of water literacy by building a water map of India and the world,” the course organizers say. After a nitty gritty prologue to basic parts of water quality, understudies will lead down to earth tests including reviews. IIT-M stated in a statement, “Upon completion, they will receive a certificate that may be credited as part of their degree program through their institution.”

The deadline for registering for the water quality course is July 20. On July 29, classes are expected to begin.

In addition to guest lecturers from IIT Madras, BARC, and Purdue University, the course will be taught by T Pradeep and Ligy Philip from IIT Madras, Hadas Mamane and Ram Fishman from Tel Aviv University, and G Velmurugan from KMCH-Research Foundation.

Thalappil Pradeep, a professor at the Department of Chemistry at IIT Madras and recipient of the Padma Shri, stated: People will only be able to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals if they comprehend the factors that prevent them from doing so. One of these is the quality of the water. People who take this course will be able to create trustworthy data about water quality and become water experts. The course is part of an effort to educate global water professionals.

The course is titled “A Hybrid Course on Water Quality: The course, “An Approach to People’s Water Data,” will teach you everything you need to know about water quality, including how key parameters affect human health and how they affect water quality. Pradeep added that it will also create a database on the quality of water from a variety of sources, including household wells, rivers, borewells, groundwater, and pipeline networks.
