IIT Madras celebrates 64th Institute Day
Today, April 20, students, faculty, and non-teaching staff at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) celebrated its 64th Institute Day. In addition, the institute honored successful alumni, faculty, and students. Viswanathan Kumaran, a professor at IISc Bengaluru, was given the Distinguished Alumni Award (DAA) for the year 2020.
For the 2022-23 “Srimathi Marti Annapurna Gurunath Award for Excellence in Teaching,” Rupesh Nasre from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Nagabhushana Rao Vadlamani from the Department of Aerospace Engineering were selected jointly. Marti Subrahmanyam, a graduate of IIT Madras and the Stern School of Business at New York University, established the foundation for this award.
Sridhar Vembu, founder and CEO of Zoho Corporation and distinguished IIT Madras alumnus awardee, was the main guest at this event. Vembu made the following remarks to the faculty and students: Because we are developing systems for the real world, the models had to accurately represent it. That’s when I realized this is the essence of real engineering. We needed to build models that would work in the real world, and the only way to do that is by actually building systems from the real world. That was most likely quite possibly of the most profound example I learnt. To even make models meaningful, we needed to build things from the real world.” The “Lifetime Achievement Research Award of IIT Madras” was presented to RI Sujith, Department of Aerospace Engineering. He was awarded a colloquium by the Institute and given the title “Institute Professor.” He has been asked to teach and hire researchers from different departments. A grant of Rs. 50 lakh is included in the award, which will be used as a project.
