IIT Kanpur tests India’s first hypervelocity expansion tunnel test facility

IIT Kanpur: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Kanpur) has established and tested the country’s first hypervelocity expansion tunnel test facility, S2. It will be capable of generating flight speeds between 3-10 km per second, simulating the hypersonic conditions encountered during atmospheric entry of vehicles, asteroid entry, scramjet flights, and ballistic missiles.

The test office for progressing missions of the Indian Space Exploration Association (ISRO) and Guard Innovative work Association (DRDO) including Gaganyaan, reusable send off vehicles (RLV), and hypersonic voyage rockets.

The 24-meter-long Hypersonic Experimental Aerodynamics Laboratory (HEAL) at IIT Kanpur’s aerospace engineering department houses the S2, also known as “Jigarthanda.” It has been natively planned and created over a time of three years with subsidizing and support from the Aeronautical Innovative work Load up (ARDB), the division of science and innovation (DST) and IIT Kanpur.

IIT Kanpur chief S Ganesh said, “The fruitful foundation of S2 marks a noteworthy achievement for IIT Kanpur and for the country’s logical capacities. I salute Sugarno and his group for their commendable work in planning and manufacturing the hypersonic research foundation. S2 will engage India’s space and protection associations with homegrown hypersonic testing capacities for basic tasks and missions.”

Mohammed Ibrahim Sugarno, academic administrator, community for lasers and photonics at IIT Kanpur said, “Building S2 has been very difficult, expecting top to bottom information on physical science and accuracy designing. The most essential and testing perspective was culminating the ‘free cylinder driver’ framework, which requires terminating a cylinder at high tension between 20-35 climates down a 6.5 m pressure tube at paces of 150-200 m/s, and carrying it to a stand-still or ‘delicate arriving’ toward the end.”
