IIT Guwahati ex-Director takes charge as AICTE Chairman

The designation of the AICTE Chairman has been handed over to former Director T. G. Sitharam of the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati.

Sitharam took over as chair of the University Grants Commission (UGC) from M Jagadesh Kumar, who had been in charge of AICTE since September 2022.

On December 20, Parameswar K. Iyer succeeded Sitharam as Officiating Director of IIT Guwahati with the approval of the Minister of Education in his capacity as Chairperson of IIT Council.
“I will work with each partner in the Training area to change Advanced education into enormous, well-resourced, energetic multidisciplinary giving excellent instructing, development, business venture, examination, and local area commitment center points,” Sitharam said while accepting his charge as the AICTE Executive.

Sitharam’s new mission is to make India a global center for academic knowledge by bringing the gross enrollment rate in higher education up to 50% by 2035 through AICTE interventions.

In line with this, Sitharam proposes developing five distinct pathways for a modern, competitive, and industrialized India: technology-driven outcome-based education; job-creator (JCR) mode; industry solutions provider (ISP); innovation, research, and startup mode; and Indian language education.

The new AICTE Chairman also talked about his plan of action, which is in line with the long-term goals that the Indian government has set for itself in the National Education Policy 2020.

Sitharam has held numerous administrative positions at institutions like IISc, IIT, and CIT, participated in numerous boards, and worked with AICTE for more than six years on multidisciplinary issues addressing a variety of societal challenges.

T.G. Sitharam stated, “With more advanced research at all institutions, AICTE can create many Innovations and new start-ups as an excellent job creator,” when discussing the creation of employment opportunities for India’s young population and the establishment of an entrepreneurial ecosystem.
