IIT-BHU hosts third round of Dark Patterns Buster Hackathon

IIT-BHU: The consumer affairs department organised round 3 of the inter-college competition of Dark Patterns Buster Hackathon (DPBH-2023) at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) BHU. The hackathon is aimed towards innovation in designing and prototyping application or software-based solutions such as browser extensions, plugins, add-ons and mobile applications that can detect the use, type and scale of dark patterns for e-Commerce platforms.

In the finale of cycle 3, a greater number of than 500 understudies, 150 subject specialists and jury individuals partook. The union government recognized 13 distinct types of illegal dark patterns, and each team presented real-time working models that could do so. Rohit Kumar Singh, secretary DoCA, was the central visitor at the occasion which was coordinated in cooperation of the Division and the establishment.

The DPBH 2023 was sent off by the shopper issues division on October 26, 2023. This year, DPBH 2023 saw investment from in excess of 150 universities and north of 40,000 understudies. A sum of 380 groups contended in the second round of the intra-school rivalry, from which 172 were shortlisted for cycle 3.

The 13 specific dark patterns that the Department of Consumer had identified were the focus of the solutions that the participating teams presented. Secretary DoCA Rohit Singh congratulated the students and stated that the solutions provided by participants will not only assist in detecting dark patterns but will also be a major game changer in regulating other online deceptive practices like fake reviews, online traps, and misleading advertisements.
