Gujarat junior clerk exam cancelled after question paper leak

The state panchayat exam board reported that a suspect was detained by police in connection with the question paper leak of Gujarat junior clerk exam that resulted in the cancellation of the Gujarat government’s competitive examination for the recruitment of junior clerks hours before it was scheduled to take place on Sunday. For the exam for 1,181 positions, which was scheduled to be held at 2,995 locations across the state, as many as 9.5 lakh candidates had registered. The Gujarat Panchayat Service Selection Board said in a statement that it had decided to “postpone” the exam in the wider interest of the candidates after police detained a suspect and recovered a copy of the exam’s question paper early Sunday morning on the basis of a tip.

It said that the police were looking into the situation. On January 29, the junior clerk (administrative/accounting) exam was scheduled to be held in various districts from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. The board stated in the statement that, “according to the information received from the police early Sunday morning, they detained a suspect and upon his interrogation seized a copy of the question paper from his possession.”

The board informed the candidates not to attend the examination centers and expressed regret for the candidates’ inconvenience. “The board will issue a new advertisement for the examination, which will be conducted anew at the earliest,” it stated. Manish Doshi, a spokesperson for the Gujarat Congress, claimed that the question paper leak had resulted in the cancellation of the 15th government competitive exam in the previous 12 years. Despite the government’s claims of strict action, the primary perpetrators have not been apprehended. He asserted, “The government is playing with the state’s youth’s future.” Doshi asserted that the exam, for which the initial announcement was made in 2016, had been postponed for the third time.

Doshi asserted that the exam, for which the initial announcement was made in 2016, had been postponed for the third time. Isudan Gadhvi, president of the Gujarat Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), took to Twitter to criticize the state’s BJP government regarding the paper leak. Numerous instances of leaked competitive exam question papers had marred Gujarat and sparked widespread youth agitation in the state. Prior to the state Assembly elections that took place a month ago, the BJP government had faced significant opposition regarding the issue from the Congress and the AAP. Arvind Kejriwal, the national convener of the AAP, had even promised to introduce a strict law against the leak of exam papers that included a ten-year prison sentence during the state’s election campaign.
