The bulletin, prepared by the National Statistical Office (NSO), provides important information on employment, unemployment and labour-force participation in India. The latest data covers both rural and urban areas and is particularly relevant for understanding changes in India&#8217;s labour market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Overall_Labour_Force_Participation_Rate_Declines\"><\/span>Overall Labour Force Participation Rate Declines<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the PLFS April\u2013June 2026 data, the overall <strong>Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR)<\/strong> for people aged 15 years and above stood at <strong>54.6%<\/strong>, compared with 55.5% in January\u2013March 2026. Rural LFPR declined from 58.2% to <strong>56.9%<\/strong>, while the urban LFPR remained unchanged at <strong>50.2%<\/strong>. The overall LFPR was also 0.4 percentage points lower than in April\u2013June 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Female_Labour_Force_Participation_Shows_Decline\"><\/span>Female Labour Force Participation Shows Decline<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bulletin highlights a decline in female participation in the labour force. Overall female LFPR for persons aged 15 years and above fell to <strong>33.2%<\/strong> in April\u2013June 2026 from 34.7% in the preceding quarter. In urban areas, however, male LFPR increased marginally from 75.0% to <strong>75.3%<\/strong>. These gender-based indicators are important for assessing women&#8217;s participation in India&#8217;s workforce and remain relevant to questions on inclusive growth and demographic trends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Worker_Population_Ratio_Remains_Stable_in_Urban_Areas\"><\/span>Worker Population Ratio Remains Stable in Urban Areas<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Worker Population Ratio (WPR)<\/strong> for persons aged 15 years and above stood at <strong>51.7%<\/strong> nationally during April\u2013June 2026, compared with 52.8% in the previous quarter. In urban India, WPR remained broadly stable at <strong>46.8%<\/strong>, compared with 46.9% during January\u2013March 2026. Urban male WPR increased slightly to 70.7%, while urban female WPR stood at 22.8%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Unemployment_Rises_in_Rural_Areas\"><\/span>Unemployment Rises in Rural Areas<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unemployment picture was mixed across rural and urban India. The <strong>urban unemployment rate remained broadly stable at 6.7%<\/strong>, compared with 6.6% in the previous quarter. In contrast, rural unemployment increased from 4.3% to <strong>4.8%<\/strong>. At the same time, female unemployment in urban areas declined from 9.1% to <strong>8.7%<\/strong>, indicating some improvement in urban female unemployment during the quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Regular_Wage_Employment_Records_an_Increase\"><\/span>Regular Wage Employment Records an Increase<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One significant development was the rise in the share of people engaged in regular wage or salaried employment. In rural areas, the share increased from <strong>15.5% to 16.1%<\/strong>, while in urban areas it increased from <strong>48.9% to 49.3%<\/strong> between January\u2013March and April\u2013June 2026. This indicator is important because regular salaried employment generally provides greater employment continuity compared with some forms of casual work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Rural_Employment_Shows_Sectoral_Diversification\"><\/span>Rural Employment Shows Sectoral Diversification<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest PLFS data also indicates changes in the composition of rural employment. The share of rural workers employed in agriculture declined from <strong>55.8% to 52.9%<\/strong> between January\u2013March and April\u2013June 2026. Meanwhile, the share employed in the secondary sector, including mining and quarrying, increased from 22.6% to <strong>24.4%<\/strong>. The tertiary sector&#8217;s share also rose from 21.7% to <strong>22.7%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tertiary_Sector_Continues_to_Dominate_Urban_Employment\"><\/span>Tertiary Sector Continues to Dominate Urban Employment<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Urban employment remains strongly concentrated in the tertiary sector. During April\u2013June 2026, the tertiary sector accounted for around <strong>62.0%<\/strong> of urban employment, slightly higher than 61.7% during the same quarter of 2025. The share of employment in the secondary sector, including mining and quarrying, stood at 31.9%, while agriculture accounted for 6.1% of urban employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"PLFS_Methodology_and_Current_Weekly_Status\"><\/span>PLFS Methodology and Current Weekly Status<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The PLFS is India&#8217;s primary source for information on labour-force participation and employment-unemployment conditions. From January 2025, the survey methodology was modified to provide monthly and quarterly labour-market estimates for both rural and urban areas under the <strong>Current Weekly Status (CWS)<\/strong> framework. Earlier quarterly PLFS bulletins, up to December 2024, covered quarterly labour-market indicators only for urban areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Large_Number_of_Workers_Covered_by_the_Survey\"><\/span>Large Number of Workers Covered by the Survey<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The April\u2013June 2026 estimates were based on information collected from <strong>5,59,673 persons<\/strong>, including 2,40,881 persons in urban areas and 3,18,792 in rural areas.
