It is designed for short\u2011range aerial combat engagements, also known as dogfights, where rapid targeting and high agility are crucial. The missile uses an <strong>infrared imaging seeker<\/strong> and operates on a <strong>\u201cfire\u2011and\u2011forget\u201d<\/strong> principle\u2014once launched, it automatically tracks and engages the enemy aircraft without further input from the pilot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This missile system has already been successfully integrated on modern Indian platforms such as the <strong>HAL Tejas<\/strong> and <strong>Jaguar<\/strong> combat aircraft, and now the IAF intends to expand its deployment to the MiG\u201129 fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_the_Upgrade_Matters_for_IAFs_Combat_Capability\"><\/span><strong>Why the Upgrade Matters for IAF\u2019s Combat Capability<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The current missile used on MiG\u201129 jets, the <strong>R\u201173 missile<\/strong>, is an older Soviet\u2011era weapon with a <strong>range of approximately 10\u201315 km<\/strong>. In contrast, ASRAAM offers a <strong>strike range of over 25 km<\/strong>, providing a substantial improvement in close\u2011range aerial engagement performance. Dynamics Limited (BDL)<\/strong>, India is working on <strong>local assembly and testing facilities<\/strong> for these missiles, aligning with the national goal of defence indigenization and
