He was widely acknowledged for his deep research on Odisha\u2019s history, culture and religious traditions, especially the <strong>Jagannath cult<\/strong>, which helped place Odisha\u2019s heritage on the global academic map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born in <strong>Berlin, Germany, in 1938<\/strong>, Kulke developed a lifelong fascination with Indian culture and history. After completing his Ph.D. in Indology from <em>Freiburg University<\/em> in 1967, he embarked on extensive research into Indian temple traditions, political structures and religious movements that shaped pre\u2011modern Indian society. His scholarship helped redefine historical understanding of medieval India and its diverse regional cultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%F0%9F%93%98_Academic_Research_Contributions\"><\/span>\ud83d\udcd8 <strong>Academic &amp; Research Contributions<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Prof. Kulke\u2019s academic career spanned more than five decades. He was a professor of South and Southeast Asian history at <em>Kiel University<\/em> and taught Indian history at the <em>South Asia Institute of Heidelberg University<\/em> for over 20 years. His research emphasized how religion, politics and societal structures intertwined to shape early Indian state formation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Importantly, Kulke was a founding coordinator of the <strong>Orissa Research Projects<\/strong> (ORP), supported by the German Research Council. These projects enabled collaboration between Indian and international scholars, for in\u2011depth study of Odisha\u2019s culture, history and temple traditions.
