German development agency <strong>GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft f\u00fcr Internationale Zusammenarbeit)<\/strong> and the <strong>State Mission for Clean Ganga (SMCG)<\/strong> to prepare basin-based masterplans for the <strong>Ichhamati and Jalangi rivers<\/strong>. The agreement aims to restore and manage these rivers through scientific planning and sustainable water management strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative marks an important step toward improving river health, reducing pollution, and strengthening water management systems in the region. Both rivers are transboundary water bodies shared by <strong>India and Bangladesh<\/strong>, making their conservation important not only for West Bengal but also for regional ecological stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Role_of_the_Nodi_Bandhan_Programme\"><\/span>Role of the Nodi Bandhan Programme<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The basin planning initiative is part of the <strong>\u201cNodi Bandhan\u201d programme<\/strong>, announced in the <strong>West Bengal Budget 2025\u201326<\/strong>, with a budget allocation of around <strong>\u20b9200 crore<\/strong>. Under this programme, the state government aims to develop scientific masterplans for different river basins in collaboration with international experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the <strong>39 river sub-basins in West Bengal<\/strong>, the Ichhamati and Jalangi basins have been selected as the first to undergo this planning process. The project is expected to prepare detailed strategies to rejuvenate the rivers and address long-standing environmental challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Key_Objectives_of_the_Basin_Masterplan\"><\/span>Key Objectives of the Basin Masterplan<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The masterplan will focus on multiple measures to restore the ecological health of the rivers. Proposed measures include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Dredging river channels<\/strong> to improve water flow<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reducing pollution<\/strong> from domestic, industrial and agricultural sources<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Minimising riverbank erosion<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Improving groundwater recharge<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Enhancing flood management and irrigation supply<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Diverting surplus water from other basins where feasible<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the planning stage is completed and approved by relevant authorities, the implementation phase of the project will begin. The preparation of the masterplan is expected to take about <strong>one year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Environmental_Challenges_in_the_Ichhamati_River\"><\/span>Environmental Challenges in the Ichhamati River<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Ichhamati River<\/strong> flows for about <strong>200 km along the India\u2013Bangladesh border<\/strong> and plays a crucial role in irrigation, fisheries, biodiversity, and sediment supply to the Sundarbans delta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the river has been facing severe ecological decline due to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Heavy <strong>siltation<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Water hyacinth infestation<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Industrial and domestic pollution<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Riverbank erosion<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Urban centres such as <strong>Basirhat, Hasnabad and Taki<\/strong> discharge untreated waste into the river, worsening water quality and affecting local livelihoods dependent on fishing and agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Environmental_Issues_in_the_Jalangi_River\"><\/span>Environmental Issues in the Jalangi River<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Jalangi River<\/strong>, a distributary of the <strong>Ganga<\/strong>, flows through <strong>Murshidabad and Nadia districts<\/strong> before joining the Bhagirathi\u2013Hooghly river system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The river has experienced declining water flow due to changes in the <strong>Padma river channel<\/strong>, which has led to rapid siltation and reduced water movement. Other environmental concerns include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Municipal sewage and industrial effluents<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Heavy silt deposition<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Riverbank
