granted its approval for the <strong>Kamala Hydroelectric Project<\/strong>, a large-scale renewable energy initiative in <strong>Arunachal Pradesh<\/strong>. This project, expected to have an installed capacity of <strong>1,720 megawatts (MW)<\/strong>, will significantly enhance India\u2019s clean energy output, contribute to flood control, and generate employment opportunities in the Northeastern region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Positioned on the <strong>Kamala River<\/strong>, a major tributary of the Subansiri, the project spans the <strong>Kamle, Kra Daadi, and Kurung Kumey<\/strong> districts. The scheme has been designed as a <strong>storage-based hydel power plant with an integrated flood moderation system<\/strong> that will help manage extreme monsoon river flows, particularly benefitting areas in the Brahmaputra valley, which are prone to seasonal flooding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Strategic_Objectives_and_Key_Features\"><\/span><strong>Strategic Objectives and Key Features<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the <strong>Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT)<\/strong> model, the Kamala project will be developed through a public-private partnership where <strong>NHPC Ltd.<\/strong> holds <strong>74% equity<\/strong>, and the <strong>Government of Arunachal Pradesh<\/strong> owns the remaining <strong>26%<\/strong>. The estimated project cost is <strong>\u20b926,070 crore<\/strong>, with financing structured at a <strong>70:30 debt-equity ratio<\/strong> supported by government grants and tax reimbursements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The facility will feature a <strong>216-metre-high concrete gravity dam<\/strong> and a <strong>state-of-the-art underground powerhouse<\/strong>, designed to operate efficiently throughout the year. It is expected to take approximately <strong>96 months (8 years)<\/strong> to complete and will generate around <strong>6,870 million units of electricity annually<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Regional_and_Economic_Benefits\"><\/span><strong>Regional and Economic Benefits<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond energy generation, the project promises <strong>flood moderation<\/strong> for downstream regions, making it a crucial infrastructure asset for disaster risk reduction in the Brahmaputra Basin. It will also create <strong>job opportunities<\/strong>, with about <strong>300 direct<\/strong> and <strong>2,500 contract<\/strong> positions anticipated during peak construction phases, thereby boosting local livelihoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The initiative will also contribute to regional development through improved infrastructure, enhanced power security, and the creation of a <strong>Local Area Development Fund<\/strong> from which the area will benefit annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Role_in_Indias_Renewable_Energy_Transition\"><\/span><strong>Role in India\u2019s Renewable Energy Transition<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This project plays a vital role in strengthening India\u2019s transition towards <strong>clean and sustainable energy<\/strong>. By adding hydropower capacity and integrating flood management, it aligns directly with the nation\u2019s commitment to achieving <strong>net-zero carbon emissions by 2070<\/strong>, as outlined in
