The announcement was made by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari at a Technology Transfer Ceremony titled <em>\u201cFrom Farm Residue to Road: Bio-Bitumen via Pyrolysis\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bio-bitumen is derived from <strong>agricultural waste<\/strong> such as rice straw, lignin, and other biomass residues. Through an advanced process called <strong>pyrolysis<\/strong>, crop waste is converted into bio-oil, which is then refined and <strong>blended with conventional bitumen<\/strong> to create a strong, flexible, and sustainable binding material for road asphalt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The commercial production of bio-bitumen is expected to bring major transformations in India\u2019s infrastructure sector. It provides a <strong>green solution to the problem of stubble burning<\/strong>, which contributes significantly to air pollution in northern India every winter. By converting farm residue into valuable industrial material, the initiative supports the Government\u2019s <strong>Waste-to-Wealth mission<\/strong> and promotes a <strong>circular economy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to government officials, a blend of up to <strong>15% bio-bitumen<\/strong> in road asphalt can save India approximately <strong>\u20b94,500 crore in foreign exchange<\/strong> by reducing dependence on imported crude oil and conventional bitumen. This innovation not only strengthens rural economies by creating new revenue avenues for farmers but also aligns with <strong>sustainable development goals<\/strong> and India\u2019s vision of <em>Viksit Bharat 2047<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several companies have received the technology from CSIR (Council of Scientific &amp; Industrial Research) to begin commercial
