The bill was introduced on the opening day of the winter session by Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam. <br>Under the new law, entering into a marriage while already legally married to another person \u2014 without a valid divorce or annulment \u2014 will be considered a criminal offence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Key_Provisions_and_Punishments_Under_the_Bill\"><\/span>Key Provisions and Punishments Under the Bill<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bill prescribes imprisonment of up to seven years for a first offence of polygamy. <br>If a person conceals an existing marriage and enters a subsequent marriage, the punishment increases to up to ten years of imprisonment. <br>Moreover, anyone facilitating or solemnising such an illegal marriage \u2014 including religious functionaries (priests or Qazis), village heads, guardians or legal guardians \u2014 will also be liable to punishment. They may face imprisonment of up to two years and fines, depending on their role. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Civic_and_Legal_Consequences_for_Convicts\"><\/span>Civic and Legal Consequences for Convicts<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond criminal penalties, the bill includes civil and administrative disqualifications. A person convicted under this law will be disqualified from public employment funded or aided by the state government. Rather, it aims to promote monogamy, ensure women\u2019s rights, and modernize personal laws. <br>He further indicated that this move could be a stepping stone toward a broader framework such as a
