Important current affairs update for competitive exams.<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"SC_Orders_Jharkhand_to_Declare_Saranda_Forest_a_Wildlife_Sanctuary\"><\/span>SC Orders Jharkhand to Declare Saranda Forest a Wildlife Sanctuary<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a landmark ruling, the <strong>Supreme Court of India<\/strong> has directed the <strong>Jharkhand government<\/strong> to officially declare <strong>31,468.25 hectares<\/strong> (approximately 314 sq km) of the <strong>Saranda Forest<\/strong> as a <strong>wildlife sanctuary<\/strong> within <strong>three months<\/strong> The court\u2019s order excludes six forest compartments (KP-2, KP-10, KP-11, KP-12, KP-13, KP-14) from the sanctuary because they are designated for mining under the state\u2019s Management Plan for Sustainable Mining (MPSM). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bench, comprising <strong>Chief Justice B. R. Gavai<\/strong> and <strong>Justice K. Vinod Chandran<\/strong>, underscored that this notification must also involve <strong>wide publicity<\/strong> so that tribal and forest-dwelling communities are aware that their <strong>individual and community rights<\/strong> remain protected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Importantly, the court reiterated that <strong>mining activities will not be permitted<\/strong> within a <strong>1-kilometre eco-sensitive zone<\/strong> around the sanctuary\u2019s boundary.  The bench referred to its earlier direction (from the <strong>Goa Foundation case, 2023<\/strong>) prohibiting mining within one kilometre of notified protected areas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The court also insisted that <strong>essential public infrastructure<\/strong>\u2014such as schools, dispensaries, roads, and rail lines\u2014should continue to function in and around the region, and these should be explicitly protected in the notification so that local communities do not fear loss of access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This judgment comes after repeated delays by the state government. The court has previously expressed serious displeasure, even threatening contempt proceedings against Jharkhand&#8217;s Chief Secretary for failing to issue the sanctuary notification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr
