This agreement expands the scope of rail-based freight movement, especially along the <strong>Jogbani (India) \u2013 Biratnagar (Nepal)<\/strong> rail corridor, allowing for more efficient transport of both containerized and bulk cargo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_the_Agreement_Includes\"><\/span>What the Agreement Includes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The LoE permits <strong>direct rail movement<\/strong> of freight \u2014 containerized and bulk \u2014 between Jogbani in India and Biratnagar in Nepal. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The revised protocol liberalizes cargo definitions and opens <strong>multimodal access<\/strong> via key Indian ports, including <strong>Kolkata<\/strong> and <strong>Visakhapatnam<\/strong>, linked through transit corridors: Kolkata\u2013Jogbani, Kolkata\u2013Nautanwa (Sunauli), and Visakhapatnam\u2013Nautanwa (Sunauli). <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It facilitates <strong>third-country trade<\/strong>, allowing Nepal to use Indian port infrastructure to export to or import from other countries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The rail link itself \u2014 Jogbani to Biratnagar \u2014 was constructed with <strong>Indian grant assistance<\/strong> and was jointly inaugurated by the prime ministers of both nations on <strong>1 June 2023<\/strong>. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Strategic_Significance\"><\/span>Strategic Significance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"For_Nepal\"><\/span>For Nepal<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This agreement can <strong>reduce logistics costs<\/strong> and transit times, especially for industrial and bulk goods. With access to major Indian ports, Nepal\u2019s exporters and importers now have better routes to global markets.  It could also help <strong>decongest existing transit points<\/strong> and streamline trade flows. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For India, this move reinforces its <strong>Neighbourhood First policy<\/strong> by deepening economic ties with Nepal.  It also supports greater multimodal infrastructure and cross-border logistics capabilities, strengthening India\u2019s position as Nepal\u2019s key trade partner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Infrastructure_Trade_Facilitation\"><\/span>Infrastructure &amp; Trade Facilitation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meeting between Indian Commerce Minister <strong>Piyush Goyal<\/strong> and Nepal\u2019s <strong>Anil Kumar Sinha<\/strong> underscored a broader commitment to cross-border infrastructure \u2014 including Integrated Check Posts (ICPs) \u2014 to facilitate smoother trade.  The Nepal Customs Yard at Morang district, near Biratnagar, will serve as a critical cargo station for this corridor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\" id=\"India-Nepal-rail-connectivity\"><img decoding=\"async\"
