Kumkum Mohod Jaspal Rana Award and Sujeet Kalkal Raja Randhir Singh Award: know the first IOA award recipients, their Asian Games achievements and key exam facts.

Indian Olympic Association Introduces Two New Awards

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has named Indian archer Kumkum Anil Mohod and wrestler Sujeet Kalkal as the inaugural recipients of two newly instituted awards recognising the best female and male sportspersons at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026. Mohod received the Jaspal Rana Award, while Kalkal was named the first recipient of the Raja Randhir Singh Award. The awards were introduced to recognise outstanding performances at the continental sporting event and commemorate the contributions of two prominent figures in Indian sport.

Kumkum Mohod Receives Jaspal Rana Award

Seventeen-year-old Kumkum Mohod made an impressive debut at the Asian Games, winning three medals, including two gold medals. She played a major role in India’s historic performance in women’s recurve archery. Alongside Ankita Bhakat and Kirti, Mohod helped India win its first-ever Asian Games gold medal in the women’s recurve team event. The victory also ended South Korea’s seven-edition winning streak in the event, which had continued since the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games.

Historic Individual Recurve Gold for Mohod

Mohod followed her team success with another landmark achievement by winning the women’s individual recurve gold medal. Her victory was significant because it marked the first time that an Indian woman won the individual recurve gold at the Asian Games. Her performance also ensured that South Korea’s women did not win a recurve gold medal at the Asian Games for the first time in the discipline’s history. The individual gold additionally secured an Olympic quota place for India for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Sujeet Kalkal Wins Raja Randhir Singh Award

Wrestler Sujeet Kalkal was selected as the inaugural recipient of the Raja Randhir Singh Award after winning the men’s 65 kg freestyle wrestling gold medal. The 23-year-old produced a memorable campaign, defeating reigning Olympic champion Kotaro Kiyooka of Japan in the semi-final before making a dramatic comeback in the final against Abdulmazhid Kudiyev. Kalkal was trailing 2–9 with limited time remaining but fought back to win 10–9 and secure the gold medal.

Continuation of India’s 65 kg Wrestling Tradition

Kalkal’s achievement also extended India’s strong record in the men’s 65 kg category at the Asian Games. Before him, Yogeshwar Dutt won gold in this weight class at the 2014 Asian Games, followed by Bajrang Punia in 2018. His victory therefore added another significant chapter to India’s record in the category and contributed to India’s successful overall campaign at Aichi-Nagoya.

IOA Honours Sporting Excellence

The new awards represent an effort by the Indian Olympic Association to recognise exceptional individual performances at the Asian Games. The Jaspal Rana Award is for the best female sportsperson, while the Raja Randhir Singh Award is for the best male sportsperson of the Games. IOA President PT Usha highlighted the performances of both athletes and the qualities they demonstrated under pressure. The IOA is expected to felicitate Mohod and Kalkal at a ceremony following the Games.

India’s Strong Showing at Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games

India finished fourth in the overall medal standings at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games with 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze medals, giving the country a total of 85 medals. The performances of Mohod and Kalkal were among the notable individual achievements of India’s campaign. Their recognition through the newly introduced IOA awards makes the development particularly relevant for government-exam aspirants studying sports, awards, Asian Games and Indian sporting achievements.
