The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced OneTag, a FASTag portability service that allows eligible users to change their FASTag issuer bank without replacing the physical FASTag attached to their vehicle. The facility is available through the Rajmargyatra mobile application and is designed to provide greater flexibility to National Highway users.
Under the new system, users do not need to remove the FASTag sticker from their vehicle when changing the issuer. After successful portability, the existing FASTag ID linked to the vehicle registration number remains unchanged. This means that the physical tag can continue to be used even though the issuer bank changes.
The portability process is designed to be completed through the Rajmargyatra app. Users first log in and enter their vehicle registration number to check eligibility. The existing issuer bank then provides a six-digit Mobile Verification Code (MVC) for authorisation. After verification, the user selects a new issuer and completes customer verification and wallet onboarding requirements.
Changing the issuer does not simply transfer the existing FASTag wallet to the new bank. Once portability is successfully completed, the previous issuer closes the existing wallet and refunds the available balance after applicable adjustments. Users therefore need to understand the wallet-related process before switching to another issuer.
One important condition of the OneTag facility is the six-month cooling period. After an interoperable FASTag has been ported to another issuer, it cannot be ported again during the following six months. This restriction is important for users to remember before completing an issuer change.
FASTag is an important component of India’s Electronic Toll Collection system. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, FASTag has a penetration rate of more than 98 per cent and around 13 crore users. OneTag builds on this established digital tolling infrastructure by making the issuer-switching process more flexible while retaining the existing physical tag.
OneTag is a joint initiative involving the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). The initiative is intended to improve FASTag lifecycle management by reducing repeated production, dispatch and reissuance of physical tags. It also expands the citizen-centric services available through the Rajmargyatra application.
For government-exam preparation, OneTag is relevant to topics such as digital payments, transportation infrastructure, electronic toll collection, digital governance and public-sector technology initiatives. Aspirants should remember the organisations associated with the initiative, the Rajmargyatra app, the unchanged FASTag ID, the six-month cooling period and the approximate number of FASTag users. These details can be useful in General Awareness, Current Affairs and government-exam questions.
OneTag is important because it allows FASTag users to change their issuer bank without obtaining a replacement physical tag. Earlier, changing the issuer generally involved closing the existing arrangement and obtaining another FASTag. The new portability mechanism separates the physical tag from the issuer relationship, giving eligible users greater flexibility.
The initiative demonstrates the continuing development of India’s digital highway infrastructure. FASTag already supports electronic toll collection across National Highways, while OneTag adds portability to the existing interoperable framework. This represents an additional layer of digital convenience for highway users.
OneTag can reduce the requirement for repeated physical FASTag production, dispatch and reissuance when users change issuers. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, this can contribute to lower operational costs and more efficient FASTag lifecycle management.
The initiative is relevant to examinations because it connects technology with public infrastructure and citizen-centric service delivery. Questions can be framed around NHAI, IHMCL, NPCI, FASTag, Rajmargyatra, electronic toll collection and the portability mechanism.
FASTag is based on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology and enables automatic toll deduction at toll plazas. It became an important component of India’s efforts to digitise toll collection and reduce dependence on cash transactions.
The National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) framework created an interoperable system through which FASTags issued by participating institutions could be used across compatible toll plazas. This interoperability enabled motorists to travel across different National Highway routes without requiring separate toll-payment arrangements.
FASTag adoption expanded substantially as electronic toll collection became increasingly integrated into India’s highway network. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways currently states that FASTag has more than 98 per cent penetration and around 13 crore users.
OneTag represents a further development of the FASTag ecosystem. While interoperability allows the same FASTag to function across participating toll plazas, OneTag enables eligible users to change the issuer while retaining the physical tag and FASTag ID. The service therefore addresses the issuer-switching aspect of FASTag management.
