The Government of Gujarat has launched an innovative environmental monitoring programme called the “Lake and Air Watch” initiative. This project aims to track and improve urban lake health and air quality across cities in real time. It is being implemented under the Gujarat Urban Development Mission, which functions under the state’s Urban Development and Urban Housing Department.
The primary objective of this initiative is to create a unified digital system that monitors environmental indicators such as lake pollution levels and Air Quality Index (AQI). Rapid urbanisation has led to environmental degradation, including polluted lakes, declining groundwater recharge, and worsening air quality. This programme aims to address these challenges through timely monitoring and intervention.
A key feature of the initiative is the use of satellite technology to monitor lakes. This includes tracking lake area, detecting waste accumulation, and identifying algae growth. Such advanced monitoring ensures early detection of environmental issues, enabling authorities to take quick conservation measures.
The initiative also focuses on air pollution control by installing air quality monitoring stations in 17 municipal corporations and 152 municipal areas. These stations will provide real-time AQI data. If pollution levels rise, automatic alerts will be generated, allowing authorities to take immediate corrective steps.
All environmental data collected will be consolidated into a centralised digital dashboard. This dashboard will display maps, trends, and alerts, improving coordination between departments. It will also make information accessible to the public, increasing transparency and environmental awareness.
The initiative is being implemented with an estimated budget of ₹10 crore. It integrates existing monitoring systems from various departments into a single platform, ensuring efficient governance and better environmental management.
