On August 1, 2025, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) officially appointed Khalid Jamil as the head coach of the Indian senior men’s national football team, following a rigorous selection from over 170 applicants

A former India international midfielder, Jamil earned 40 caps before transitioning into coaching in 2009 with Mumbai FC. He later led underdog Aizawl FC to the I‑League title in 2017, one of Indian football’s greatest success stories, showcasing his tactical flair and motivational skills He currently coaches Jamshedpur FC in the Indian Super League (ISL), with accolades including multiple AIFF Coach of the Year awards
The AIFF Executive Committee, along with the Technical Committee chaired by Indian legend IM Vijayan, narrowed the shortlist to three candidates: Khalid Jamil, Stephen Constantine, and Stefan Tarkovic Jamil’s deep understanding of Indian football culture, along with cost-effectiveness, helped him edge out his international contemporaries.
Jamil’s first assignment is set to be the CAFA Nations Cup in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, scheduled to begin in late August 2025 This will be followed by crucial AFC Asian Cup qualification matches for the 2027 tournament in Saudi Arabia, where India currently sits at the bottom of its group
