The Government of India has officially announced that Kolkata will host the main national celebrations of the International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026. The announcement was made by the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush, highlighting India’s continued global leadership in promoting yoga as a holistic wellness practice. The event will be observed on 21 June 2026, aligning with the United Nations-designated International Day of Yoga.
The theme for IDY 2026 has been declared as “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, focusing on the role of yoga in improving physical health, mental well-being, and emotional balance across all age groups. The initiative aims to encourage people—especially senior citizens—to adopt yoga as a daily practice for maintaining mobility, cognitive health, and overall quality of life.
The decision was announced during the Yoga Mahotsav 2026, organised at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Western Group of Temples, Khajuraho (Madhya Pradesh). This event marked the beginning of a 25-day countdown to International Yoga Day 2026. The programme witnessed large-scale participation in the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP), a standardised yoga practice designed by the Ministry of Ayush.
The event is being coordinated under the Ministry of Ayush, with support from the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY). The government continues to promote yoga as a preventive healthcare system and a lifestyle discipline that integrates physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.
International Yoga Day was first declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2014, and the first celebration took place in 2015. Since then, it has evolved into a global movement, with participation from nearly 190 countries, showcasing India’s cultural diplomacy and soft power.
The selection of Kolkata as the host city for International Yoga Day 2026 is significant as it reflects India’s continued efforts to promote yoga globally. It highlights India’s leadership in traditional wellness systems and strengthens its cultural diplomacy at the international level. The event will also boost Kolkata’s global visibility as a center for wellness tourism and cultural heritage.
For students preparing for UPSC, SSC, Banking, Railways, and State PSC exams, this news is crucial as it connects to topics like international organisations, government schemes, and cultural heritage initiatives. Questions related to the theme of IDY 2026, host city, and Ministry of Ayush are highly expected in competitive exams.
The theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing” reflects India’s growing focus on preventive healthcare. It aligns with national health policies promoting lifestyle-based disease prevention, especially for ageing populations.
The International Day of Yoga was proposed by India at the United Nations General Assembly in 2014, and it received support from 177 member nations. The UN declared 21 June as International Yoga Day, marking the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. The first official celebration was held on 21 June 2015, and since then, it has become a worldwide movement promoting physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Over the years, themes have focused on health, sustainability, and holistic wellness, making yoga a global cultural practice rooted in ancient Indian tradition.
