India and the European Union (EU) have jointly launched a major initiative worth €15.2 million, approximately ₹169 crore, to strengthen electric vehicle (EV) battery recycling and critical mineral recovery systems. The initiative was launched under the India-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC), specifically through Working Group-2 focused on Green and Clean Energy Technologies.
The project aims to improve battery recycling technologies, promote sustainable resource management, and support the growing electric mobility ecosystem in India. As India’s EV market expands rapidly, the demand for lithium-ion batteries and critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and graphite is also increasing. The initiative is expected to reduce dependence on imported raw materials and strengthen India’s circular economy model.
The India-EU programme will support research and innovation in advanced recycling technologies for EV batteries. The initiative will encourage the development of efficient systems for recovering valuable materials from used batteries. These materials can then be reused in manufacturing new batteries, reducing environmental damage and lowering production costs.
The programme also plans to establish digital collection systems, industrial-scale pilot projects, and technology validation centres in India. Through these measures, India and the EU seek to create a sustainable battery value chain capable of supporting future EV demand.
The European Union will fund the project through its Horizon Europe programme, while India’s Ministry of Heavy Industries will support the Indian component of the initiative. The coordinated call for proposals has invited participation from industries, start-ups, academic institutions, and research organisations from both India and Europe. Applications for proposals will remain open until September 15, 2026.
