EV Technician Training India: Shell-MSDE Launches Green Skill Program 2025

EV Technician Training India initiative launched by Shell and MSDE aims to skill youth in electric vehicle technologies and green energy for future-ready employment.

India’s Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and Shell India have joined forces to launch a nationwide “Green Skills & EV Training” initiative targeted at students and faculty from Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) in Delhi‑NCR, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka

Launch & Objectives

Launched on June 12, 2025, by the Directorate General of Training (DGT) in partnership with Shell India and implementation partner Edunet Foundation, the program aims to build industry-aligned training infrastructure. It will establish EV skill labs, offer modular courses, co-brand certificates, and provide placement support

Tiered Curriculum

  • 240‑hour Advanced EV Technician Course at four NSTIs
  • 90‑hour EV Skills Course at 12 ITIs with Shell-backed labs
  • 50‑hour Foundation Green Skills Module for additional ITIs lacking labs

Course Content & Delivery

The curriculum—developed by DGT, Shell, and Edunet—covers EV systems, diagnostics, battery technology, digital tools, and safety protocols. Over 250 instructors will undergo Training-of-Trainers (ToT) and students will receive co-branded DGT–Shell certifications and placement assistance .

Government & Industry Statements

  • MSDE Minister Jayant Chaudhary emphasized combining sustainability with vocational skilling to make India “climate-ready”
  • DGT DG Trishaljit Sethi highlighted that integrating EV tech into vocational training addresses real-world industry demand and supports India’s net-zero goals
  • Shell India’s Mansi Madan Tripathy underscored the initiative’s role in empowering youth for a lower-carbon future

Strategic Outlook

The initiative complements national schemes like FAME and supports state-level EV policies. It aims to expand vocational training infrastructure, generate green employment, and position India as a leader in the global green economy

Why This News Is Important

Aligns with National Net-Zero Commitments

India has set ambitious carbon reduction targets. Building a skilled workforce in EV and clean energy aligns with these climate goals, enabling implementation at the grassroots level.

Boosts Aspirations & Employability

For aspirants targeting government roles in education, banking, defence, railways, or civil services, this initiative offers a pathway to emerging sectors. It enhances employability in green-tech industries—vital for today’s competitive landscape.

Supports Skill India Mission

This program advances the Skill India initiative by fusing sustainability with vocational training. By training both trainers and trainees, it promotes high-quality, scalable, and localized green skill development.

Reinforces Public-Private Collaboration

MSDE-DGT’s partnership with Shell and Edunet illustrates how leveraging private sector expertise and resources boosts public skill development programs, crucial for efficient policy execution.

Sets Precedent for Future Initiatives

This scalable model—comprising multi-tier training, hands-on labs, certifications, and placements—can serve as a blueprint for future green-skills programs across other sectors.

Historical Context: Background of India’s Green-Skill Trained Workforce

India has steadily increased its emphasis on green skills and sustainable transformation. The Skill India Mission (2015) laid the foundation for vocational training in emerging sectors. With the FAME scheme introduced in 2015 (and its Phase II in 2019), focus sharpened on EV adoption. The 2021 National Education Policy spurred the integration of vocational education into formal schooling. This new MSDE–Shell partnership represents a strategic step to strengthen existing EV-related policy frameworks, bridging policy and ground-level training to prepare a future-ready workforce.
