57 schools, roads named after martyrs, eminent personalities in Jammu and Kashmir

The administration of Jammu and Kashmir has given the names of 57 schools and roads to martyrs and notable individuals. These names include Makhan Lal Bindroo, a Kashmiri Pandit who owns a pharmacy in Srinagar, and DSP Mohammad Ayoub Pandit, who was killed in 2017 near the Jamia Masjid in the same city.

The move is part of the decision made by the Lieutenant Governor administration to name public places after people who gave their lives in the “service of the nation.” According to an order that was issued by Secretary to the Government, General Administration Department, Piyush Singla, “Sanction is hereby accorded to naming of infrastructure assets after the martyrs, eminent personalities.”

Mohammad Ayoub Pandit, Deputy Superintendent of Police, is the name given to the government girls’ higher secondary school in Khanyar, Srinagar. On June 23, 2017, Pandit, 57, was stripped and beaten to death with rods outside Jamia Masjid. Makhan Lal Bindroo, the famous owner of the Bindroo Pharmacy, is the inspiration for the name of the road in Srinagar city that runs from Naaz to Gonikhan market.

Terrorists shot Bindroo, 68, at point-blank range while he was at his pharmacy in the Iqbal park area of Srinagar on October 5, 2021. According to the order, the government higher secondary school in Ghagwal (Kathua) has been given the name Major Rohit Kumar.

On September 21, 2021, Major Rohit Kumar and Major Anuj Rajput were on a training mission when their Cheetah helicopter went down in Shiv Garh Dhar, near Patnitop. The accident resulted in their deaths both.
In honor of Inspector Shabir Ahmed Bhat, who was murdered by terrorists in Srinagar, the government primary school in Shamsabad was given his name.

Sub-Inspector Imran Hussain Tak, who was killed in Srinagar on November 17, 2017, during an encounter with militants, is the name of the government higher secondary school in Basantgarh. Posthumously, he received the Shaurya Chakra for his bravery. Flight Lieutenant Advitya Bal and Wing Commander M Rana were killed when their twin-seater MiG-21 trainer aircraft crashed on a training mission near Barmer in Rajasthan on July 28, 2022.

The government girls higher secondary school in R S Pura has been named after them.

According to the LG order, roads and schools were named after one ASI, 37 Police and CRPF constables, two head constables, six selection grade constables, and five special police officers. It has been given to the divisional commissioners of the Kashmir and Jammu regions to personally monitor the naming of assets and infrastructure in their divisions.
